Zantac Recalls & Cancer Causing Medications
Sanofi recalled the heartburn drug Zantac in the U.S. and Canada a month after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerted the public that the drug may contain levels of a cancer-causing chemical.
There are several generic versions of Zantac, called ranitidine, that have already been recalled for the same contamination concerns. Walgreens, CVS and Walmart have all pulled some versions of heartburn drugs from their shelves.
There are unknowns still, and Sanofi, the French drug maker says it is investigating the issue. Meanwhile, consumers who have taken Zantac for many years to treat gastro disorders, ulcers and heartburn, are left wondering if they are at risk of developing cancer.
The FDA noted in a statement that N-nitrosodimethylamine, or NDMA, was found in samples of Zantac. NDMA is thought to be carcinogenic in humans. The FDA said the contaminant was found in “unacceptable levels.” The health agency is advising consumers who use versions of Zantac to consider using a different heartburn medication. Patients who take prescription Zantac should speak with their prescribing physician.

Valsartan Recalls
Widespread contamination of Losartan and Valsartan, popular blood pressure drugs, led to the FDA recalling versions of the drug. Cancer risks have been cited by product recall lawyers and plaintiffs have filed injury claims after being diagnosed with liver cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, kidney cancer or intestinal cancer.
NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine) is a toxin, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labels it as dangerous contaminant. Consumers who have developed cancer after taking Valsartan or Losartan AFTER 2014 may have a viable product liability claim. Safety authorities are still investigating these potentially cancer causing medications.
